|
What is it?
L S D or Lysergic acid diethylamide to give
it its full name is one of a group of psychadelic drugs. Psychadelic
refers to the change in your perception of the world around
you and moderate to high doses of LSD can lead to real hallucinations.
(Some people refer to LSD as a hallucinogenic drug.)
The majority of LSD is available impregnated on small pieces
of paper called ‘tabs’ (Shown at top of picture),
usually with different designs or logo’s, which vary
over time as fashions change. It can also be found as small
‘micro dots’ (Bottom of picture). LSD is usually
swallowed and taking LSD is called ‘tripping’.
Effects of LSD are unpredictable as with any drug as the strengths
can vary. Heat and light exposure can reduce the content of
LSD over time so you will never know how strong or weak a
tab is. |

|
| What
does it do?
As stated with other drugs, the effect depends on the drug (and
it’s strength), the set (How you’re feeling mentally/emotionally
and physically) and the setting (your environment, who you’re
with, where you are). This is more so with any hallucinogenic drugs,
particularly LSD.
Whilst
hallucinogenic drugs change your perceptions of your outside world,
they also allow you to look inside yourself and for someone not
ready to do this or in the wrong frame of mind in the wrong setting,
this can cause a bad trip and lead to a very frightening experience.
It’s
not a good idea to take it on your own. If you do try it, make
sure you have someone with you who is not using anything and will
be around if you need them.
Is
it dangerous? The main danger when taking LSD
is the power of the drug to create illusions / hallucinations
and someone may think they can do things (such as make it across
the road before a car comes etc) which, in reality they would
know they couldn’t. So the main danger is from accidents.
It
can trigger mental health problems such as paranoia, delusions
or schizophrenic-like states. Anxiety or panic attacks can also
occur for some time after use.
With
the changes in perceptions that LSD causes – don’t
drive or operate machinery!

What
do I do if my friend / child is having a bad trip?
|
- If
you know they’re tripping, you need to stay calm to be
able to help them. If they’re anxious - reassure them.
Explain it is the drug causing the panic and that it WILL wear
off.
- Respond
to their needs – they may just want you to hold them,
to listen to what they want to say or talk to them gently to
try and bring them down, reassuring them all the time until
the effects wear off.
- If
the person becomes uncontrollable or hysterical – CALL
A DOCTOR or get them to HOSPITAL. Make sure you tell them what
has been taken.
